Yesterday Utrecht Geo Graduates (UGG) organized the fourth annual Geosiences PhD day. The day, which is actually an afternoon, consisted of a plenary session, workshops and drinks. The topic of the day was "The PhD of 2025".
UGG organized three workshops: "TED-Worthy Presenting", "Negotiating in Science" and "Getting Read Outside of Academia". I followed the latter one, because I am very interested in the potential of blogging and the approaches used to get your work out there. The workshop was held by Mark Dingemanse, who is an active Tweeter and has a blog himself. We discussed the use of blogging and Mark told about a media storm that hit him last year (which was caused by an article on the word "Huh?") and how he dealt with that.
After the workshops we had drinks (and borrelnootjes of course :-D) and discussed the lectures and the workshops we had followed. We all agreed that this year's PhD day was a success and look forward to next year's!
