It was a great expedition! We all worked incredibly hard: drilling, sampling, analyzing, logging, organizing… and we have very interesting preliminary results. We are eager to open, describe and sample the large number of sediment cores that we obtained. We’ll do that at our 4-week sampling party in Bremen in January next year.
We also had great fun – see the official expedition logbook for many examples. We also learnt a lot about each others disciplines – see the blogs by microbiologists Andrea and Ian,
sedimentologists / geologists Outi and Aarno (in Finnish) and Thomas (in Swedish).
Before heading home yesterday, we had a last chance to talk while celebrating Halloween….
…with decorations made by Patrizia and various improvised (but great!) costumes. Shortly after arriving in Kiel the captain made a group picture….. and we all began to go our separate ways – while most of the operational staff remained on the ship and are sailing to Falmouth through the Kiel Canal, the science party went to various airports, train stations and other destinations. We’re looking forward to meeting again in Bremen in a few months!
