Expeditie Mexico
Kees Nooren
dagelijkse begeleider. De titel van mijn onderzoek luid: Five millennia of sea-level, palaeostorm, and Maya land use variability reconstructed from the world’s largest beach ridge plain.

Expedition Black Sea
Meet Peter Kraal, post-doc at Earth Sciences
I am Peter Kraal, a marine biogeochemist with a passion for oxygen-depleted seas and oceans, both in Earth's present and ancient past. After a PhD at Utrecht University investigating iron and phosphorus cycling in oxygen-depleted sediments, and post-doctoral research in Australia into the geochemistry of sulfidic sediments in a strongly eutrophic estuary, I will now plunge into the chemical processes in the water column and the sediments of the Black Sea. I have great interest in the analysis of dissolved and solid-phase element with advanced techniques such as X-ray spectroscopy and diffusive gel techniques. On board Pelagia I will focus on obtaining minerals from the water column through filtration and high-resolution chemical analysis of pore-water with the use of diffusive gels.
Meet Tom Jilbert, post-doc at Earth Sciences
‘Hi, I’m Tom Jilbert. I’m a researcher from Utrecht University working on the biogeochemistry of low-oxygen marine systems like the Black Sea and Baltic Sea. I use state-of-the-art analysis techniques to investigate the chemistry of marine sediments on a microscopic scale. Some of these techniques allow me to identify the minerals which trap nutrients like phosphorus into seafloor, which is important for understanding the global carbon and oxygen cycles. Others allow me to reconstruct rapid changes in the intensity of dead zones in the past. On the Black Sea cruise, we will take sediment cores from multiple locations and bring them back to our labs in Utrecht for analysis. We’ve got a great team and the boat is ready. Let’s get muddy!’
Meet Nikki Dijkstra, PhD-student at Earth Sciences
I'm Nikki Dijkstra, a PhD-student from the Utrecht University. I study the phosphorus burial in the Black Sea. This also involves research on related cycles and processes such as the iron cycle and the role of bacteria. I am (partly) responsible for the preparations of the Black Sea cruise, including packing, ordering materials and developing methods. This has been a full-time job for the last month! During the cruise, I will mainly focus on the fixation of sediments for microbial purposes and on the collection of water column particles. As this will be my first cruise, I'm really looking forward to go on board. With this blog, I will try to share some of my experiences (and frustrations) as young scientist on board of the Pelagia.
