Blog post by Master's student Maartje Oostdijk Between condominiums, villa parks and beach resorts lies the Smithsonian research center. The Smithsonian environmental research center studies the estuarine and marine environment in the region. I am staying in this sunny place on the east coast of Florida, U.S., for two weeks to conduct research for my master’s thesis. The subtropical region where we are located is the upper limit suitable for mangrove vegetation. Mangroves are well known for the protection they offer to the coast, their ability to accrete land, and the habitat and nesting area they offer for many marine species and birds. The study that my research will be part of revolves around two impounded mangroves areas. During the fifties and sixties many of the mangroves on the east coast were impounded as a method for noxious insect control. Mosquitos and sandflees lay their eggs on the exposed surface of the marshes, when flooded with the tide the eggs hatch.
